Use selection, ranges, Sync A/V, ripple, trim handles, snapping and anchored zoom in Studio.
Studio Beta in 1.2.0
Choose a tool
| Tool | Shortcut | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Select | V | Click an item; Ctrl/Cmd+click adds/removes it. Drag empty space for rectangle selection; Shift adds the rectangle results. |
| Range | R | Drag over time, including over clips. Adjust In/Out handles or numeric fields. |
| Hand | H | Drag to pan. Middle mouse temporarily pans from other tools. |
Click the time ruler to seek. Clicking a clip selects it. Empty-space click clears item selection. V or Escape exits the active time range without deleting saved export ranges.
Understand edit scope
| Operation | Default scope |
|---|---|
| Trim an overlay | Only the text, caption, image or shape selected, plus visibly selected members of a manual edit group. |
| Trim video or original audio | Synchronized A/V crops/audio with Sync A/V on. Overlay lengths remain unchanged. |
| Move media | Synchronized A/V plus overlays attached with Follow clip. |
| Move an overlay | Its own selection; attachment does not drag its owner. |
| Delete selected | Selection and active A/V links. Surviving overlays detach and keep absolute timing. |
Solid outlines mark explicit selection; dashed outlines and related counts mark additional affected elements. Group/Ungroup makes manual edit groups. Sync A/V controls media synchronization. Use Edit independently or Select entire segment in the context menu when you need a different visible scope.
Group layers without merging tracks
Select and group
Choose Select (V). Ctrl/Cmd+click multiple layers or drag a rectangle on empty timeline space, then choose Group. Existing groups are merged whole. Locks stop the operation before any membership changes.
Look for the result
Each member shows the same G1/G2 badge in the timeline and Layers. The inspector/selection context shows its group and member count, and a confirmation explains the action. Tracks, timing and the rendered frame do not change just from grouping.
Edit together
Normal click or rectangle selection includes the whole group, also across offscreen tracks. Ctrl/Cmd toggles whole groups. Drag on the timeline to move together; timing/split/delete actions retain the visible group scope and other active media links.
Edit one member
Choose Edit active layer independently in Properties, or Edit independently from the timeline context menu. Select entire group restores group editing without rebuilding the group.
Ungroup
Removes the manual group and keeps its separate layers/tracks. Sync A/V and Follow clip stay active independently. Empty, single ungrouped, already-grouped, range-mode and required locked selections have unavailable actions with explanatory tooltips.
Trim, split and rearrange
Select the layer
Use matching track colors and S/P/A markers to identify its role. Increase zoom for a very short clip, or use Start, Duration and Source in in Properties.
Drag an edge
Trim handles show Start, End, Duration and the time change. Other affected A/V outlines update with the actual preview lengths.
Use the editing actions
Split at the playhead, duplicate, copy/paste or delete. A video split divides its linked A/V and attached overlays that cross the cut, retaining relative caption/keyframe timing.
Finish or cancel
One finished gesture is one Undo/autosave. Escape or pointer cancellation restores the gesture's start. Source bounds and transition overlap guards still apply.
Cut only the intended tracks
Target tracks
Use Target in track headers, including empty tracks. Selected tracks is the default. No targets blocks a range edit; it never falls back to the whole montage.
Set the interval
Use Range, In (I), Out (O), handles or numeric bounds. The highlight covers only target tracks.
Choose the operation
Delete range leaves a gap. Ripple delete range closes it on the targets and moves later synchronized material/attachments. Cut range also copies the fragments and follows the Ripple toggle.
Choose All tracks explicitly
Only an explicit All tracks choice targets the whole montage. Global ripple updates named export ranges; partial timing edits can mark them for review.
Keyboard context
Space plays/pauses, S splits in the timeline, and Delete/Backspace edits the active selection. Ctrl/Cmd+Z and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z undo/redo. Layer-list Delete bypasses time-range mode. Text/numeric inputs keep their own text editing shortcuts; focus the timeline to use its editing commands.
Written for version 1.1. Some controls may be unavailable in an earlier installed release. See release notes.
